A Review of Kratom Plant

Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, is a tropical plant indigenous to Southeast Asia. This amazing tree is common in Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Additionally, the kratom plant is a member of the Rubiaceae family. For many years, kratom has been used for its stimulant-like properties or can be used for recreational drugs or therapeutic effects. Raw leaves can be smoked or chewed to create the desired effects, reducing fatigue from hard labor. The plant has also been used to treat symptoms of opium withdrawal. Usually, the leaves are boiled to produce teas that contain active phytochemicals. The kratom leaves can also be dried and processed into extracts, capsules, and powders.

Currently, kratom is prohibited in Indonesia and Malaysia, but Indonesia exports the plant as a cash crop in the US and other nations. In US and Europe, kratom is used for recreational and medicinal uses. Some of the common uses include reducing anxiety, depression, and pain, boosting energy and focus

This plant also alleviates withdrawal symptoms from a prescription medication or illegal dependency. Nevertheless, further clinical research must be done to ascertain the benefits of kratom and its alkaloids.

 Active Ingredients

Kratom plant contains alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxy mitragynine, which have analgesic effects, and muscle or anti-inflammatory relaxant effects. Therefore, this plant can reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Types of Kratom

 Various types of kratom strains can be distinguished by color. Color is used to reflect the drying process used after harvesting the leaves. The red vein is the most mature, followed by the green and, finally, the white vein.

Side Effects of Kratom

Small doses of kratom have less effect on health, but the higher dosage can adversely affect health. In acute overdose, you may experience sedation, vomiting, seizures, agitation, or tachycardia. Kratom is also linked to liver damage. However, patients recover within a year, and in severe cases, glucocorticoids can be administered to restore and reduce inflammation.

Furthermore, heavy kratom users can develop kratom use disorder (KUD), causing withdrawal symptoms. Pregnant women that depend on kratom can give birth to newborns with  Kratom Associated Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (KANAS). Alkaloids in this plant can interfere with the metabolism of various medications and drugs.

Conclusion

The Kratom plant has been used across Southeast Asia and gained popularity in US and Europe for its opioid and stimulant-like effects. Though beneficial, the kratom plant has a complex pharmacology that can lead to harmful effects, particularly when overused. Specifically, the negative effects of this plant are common in individuals with underlying substance use disorder.
